All in all: VERY CLOSE, GROOVISSIMO ... BRAVO!

and NOW ... to answer Tom's questions ...

* * * Ok, Peter, you asked for it....

(Well, maybe you didn't. But here it is anyway.)

ERSKOMAN QUIZ! Test your Peter Erskine knowledge here. Maybe after a while the man himself could provide us with the answers! He's also to feel free to offer any clarifications if any of my info here is somehow misleading or incorrect. And without further ado...

1. Peter Erskine had a Yamaha signature snare drum in the mid-late 1980s which he used on his first two DCI videos. Name the dimensions and type of wood used for the shell.

3. Name Peter's four '90s ECM piano trio recordings in order of their release, starting with the earliest.

TIME BEING
AS IT IS
JUNI

4. Peter toured with a reunited Steely Dan in '93. Name the two songs from the tour featuring Peter which ended up on the "Alive in America" CD.
THREE SONGS, ACTUALLY ... GREEN EARRINGS, BOOK OF LIARS & THIRD WORLD MAN

5. Name Peter's college percussion instructor(s?) and the college attended.
PROFESSOR GEORGE GABER @ INDIANA UNIVERSITY (BLOOMINGTON)

6. How many times has Mr. Erskine graced the cover of Modern Drummer magazine?
I FORGET ... 3 , I THINK.

7. Peter played double-drums on an early '80s Don Grolnick recording. Name the recording, song, and other drummer.

8. Name 5 Peter Erskine compositions which have ended up on MORE THAN ONE recording. "Live" recordings are also included.

9. As I recall, Modern Drummer's first-ever "Sound Supplement" (somewhat short-lived series of phono recordings accompanying sporadic issues of MD) featured Peter. What was it called? BONUS: Name the month/year of issue, and cover artist.
I FORGET THE ISSUE (MONTH/YEAR/COVER), BUT IT WAS A SOUND SUPPLEMENT RE: THE HI-HAT.

10. Peter appeared on two wonderful ECM recordings by trumpeter/composer Kenny Wheeler entitled "The Widow in the Window" and "Music for Large and Small Ensembles". Only one other drummer (correct me if I'm wrong, Peter!) had played on all (three?) of Wheeler's previous ECM recordings to that point. Name the drummer.

One more BONUS question....Peter did an interview in the Jazz Educators Journal in the fall of '97. Name the author/interviewer.

I have "almost" all the sound supplements. I know I'm at least missing "Spicing Up Beats" by Rod Morgenstein, the Jeff Porcaro/Paiste record, and the Steve Smith/Gary Chaffee duet.

I remember putting that "Spur of the Moment" record on when that issue came out. I just about crapped my pants when I heard that. I never heard drums (especially toms) that sounded like that, or grooves and fills phrased like that. I was in grade school at the time, and after digesting what I had heard, I just wanted to throw in the towel as far as drumming went.

PS - I thought I read somewhere that Buddy endorsed Gretsch briefly. (Might have been in a biography or something). The gist was that Buddy wanted an endorser fee in addition to free equipment, but Gretsch had a strict policy of endorsements being limited to getting new equipment once a year.

Oops! Thought it was only two. May I say, Green Earrings in particular grooves its ASS off here!!! Way to follow the path that, ahem, Chevy Chase (??) laid down!

I can't believe I get to correct Peter on this one (!), but the album's called "Hearts And Numbers". OK, you were close enough--you were there! But yeah, great track!

One more BONUS question....Peter did an interview in the Jazz Educators Journal in the fall of '97. Name the author/interviewer.

How'd I do?

Thanks, fellas ...

Peter!
******************************

You did splendidly!

Some of those things I didn't even know the answers...I just asked. Was that wrong?

Mja, thanks a million for posting those Sound Supplements! I haven't heard that stuff in years. I do remember there was one from Jonathin Mover called "Put Up Or Shut Up". Anyone have that one? That was a burning rock track.

Cool

Tom,

Whoops. Call me Mr. Knucklehead. Now I remember! And thanks, too, for the correction of the Don Grolnick album title!

All the best, with greetings now from Munich...

Peter
